Maria’s journey to a fresh start
When Maria came to Citizens Advice Westminster, she was overwhelmed by more than £15,800 of debt, including council tax arrears, benefit debts, water arrears and credit commitments. As a education worker and carer for her young niece following the loss of her relative, she was already juggling significant responsibilities. With her Breathing Space protections coming to an end and creditors pursuing enforcement action, she was facing the very real prospect of bankruptcy.
Maria’s situation was made even more challenging by severe dyslexia and a fluctuating income linked to school term times, making it difficult for her to manage complex financial matters on her own.
Our Debt Advice Manager worked closely with Maria to fully understand her circumstances and identify the best way forward. This involved liaising with creditors, Westminster City Council, the Department for Work and Pensions and utility providers, as well as carrying out a detailed assessment of her finances. Following specialist debt advice, a Debt Relief Order (DRO) application was submitted and successfully approved.
As a result, £15,802 of debt is expected to be written off, creditor action stopped and the threat of bankruptcy removed.
Today, Maria has a clear route towards financial stability and can focus on caring for her family without the constant burden of overwhelming debt. Her story demonstrates how specialist debt advice and sustained support can help people move from crisis to confidence and rebuild their future.
