From rejection to recognition: Benny’s PIP success

Benny came to Citizens Advice Westminster for support with a new Personal Independence Payment (PIP) claim. A former chef, he had been unable to work due to a combination of physical health conditions and long-term mental health difficulties, including depression and severe anxiety. Despite the significant impact these conditions had on his daily life, Benny often downplayed his struggles and found it difficult to navigate the benefits system on his own.

Liz, who worked on our Mental Health Project, supported Benny throughout the process. She helped him complete his claim, gathered supporting medical evidence and ensured that the full impact of his health conditions was properly reflected in his application.

Despite this, Benny initially received a decision that did not accurately recognise the extent of his needs. Liz continued to support him through a Mandatory Reconsideration and, when the decision remained unchanged, helped him take his case to an independent tribunal. Throughout the appeals process, she provided practical guidance, reassurance and preparation for the hearing, helping Benny feel confident enough to present his case.

In April 2026, the tribunal overturned the original decision and awarded Benny Enhanced Daily Living PIP, backdated to February 2024. The outcome resulted in a lump sum payment of £11,385, together with an ongoing award of £114.60 per week.

More importantly, the decision recognised the reality of Benny’s physical and mental health challenges. The award has provided greater financial security, reduced anxiety about the future and given him the stability he needs to focus on his wellbeing and recovery. It is a powerful example of the difference expert advice and advocacy can make when people are wrongly denied the support they are entitled to.
