OUR TOP ENERGY SAVING TIPS
If you have a timer on your central heating system, set the heating and hot water to come on only when required.
Try putting it on only 30 minutes before you get up in the morning and set it to switch off 30 minutes before you are due to leave home or go to bed.
- TURN DOWN THE HEAT AND CLOSE THE CURTAINS
Turn down your room or radiator thermostat just a degree or two – it will help. Pop on a jumper or fleece instead. Close your curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping through the windows and check for draughts around windows and doors.
- CLEAR YOUR RADIATORS
Make sure you don’t have big objects in front of your radiators to block the heat and when you close the curtains, don’t drape them across the radiators.
- TURN IT OFF
Always turn off the lights when you leave a room. Don’t leave any appliances on standby – turn the TV monitor and other electricals off, ideally at the plug. Remember not to leave laptops and mobile phones on charge once the battery is full.
- FILL YOUR WASHING MACHINE BUT DON’T FILL THE KETTLE
When you are doing the washing try to fill up the machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher. One full load uses less energy than two half loads. Also, use a cooler wash, try 30 degrees instead of 40 and a cooler cycle on a dishwasher. Only boil as much water as you need, filling the kettle each time wastes energy.
- CHECK TAPS
A dripping hot water tap can waste enough energy in a single week to fill half a bath. Fix leaking taps and make sure they are fully turned off.
- TAKE A SHOWER
Take a shower instead of a bath but keep it short and you’ll save time too!
