Bridging the digital divide

Universal Credit is one of the top issues presented by our clients since its introduction in Westminster last June, with almost 1400 hundred applicants supported to make their application last year and 665 since April this year.

Our HHelp to claim leaflet coverelp to Claim service assists clients in the early stages of their claim through to the first payment. It is a dedicated free, independent and confidential session. Our trained advisers can help with things like how to gather evidence for an application or how to prepare for the required work coach appointment within the prescribed timescale of a week.

We are supporting applicants through our Digital skills Project whereby one afternoon a week we attend the Job Centre Plus to help clients complete the on-line application form. Our project helps clients with minimal or no computer skills or access to the internet complete the lengthy application form.

Volunteer Matthew,who assists on the UC project each week, said : “We see 3-4 clients  during each session. Clients present with a number of problems from language difficulties to not having, or have forgotten, their email address and may also need to open a bank account.  The form has 12 sections and not all are applicable, so again we help them navigate the form and submit it to the Department for Work and Pensions. We also help them to set up the first meeting with their work coach which is an essential part of the UC process.”

To book an appointment at the Marylebone Job Centre Plusoffice (26-46 Lisson Grove, London NW1 6TZ), please contact your work coach.  Appointments are available on Tuesdays and Fridays.

To book an appointment at one of the Community Centres, please come along to the Advice Shop sessions:

  • Beethoven Centre, W10 4JL: Mondays 1 – 4pm
  • Churchill Gardens Residents Hall, SW1V 3AL: Thursdays 10am – 12pm
