Advice Shop Assessment Booking: Shelter

Do you need to book an assessment with Shelter?

Eligibility criteria

This service is for residents and people with a local connection to the City of Westminster who are at risk of homelessness. We aim to help residents with early interventions to prevent homelessness. The service will focus on sustaining tenancies, preventing evictions and assisting to source alternative accommodation if you cannot remain in your home.

People who are already homeless such as those in Temporary Accommodation, residing in insecure accommodation (hostels, hotels, sofa surfing) and people sleeping rough are not eligible for this service.

Areas of information/advice covered

• help to keep you in your current home where possible by preventing eviction, or addressing safety issues
• advice if you have been asked to leave your home by your family
• legal advice if you have received a notice from your landlord
• advice and support to access alternative private rented accommodation and around general housing options
• help if you are having issues with the affordability of you home for example rent arrears and other debt
• help with benefit applications and income maximisation
• advice on illegal eviction and landlord harassment
• advice around domestic abuse or other violence which is impacting on your housing
• advice on any issues which make your home unsafe to occupy
• help to access support for any other issue that may put you at risk of homelessness, for example your physical/mental health, substance/alcohol use and gambling

Our service will focus on sustaining existing tenancies and assisting to access affordable private rented accommodation.

We are generally unable to reduce wait times to access social housing or speed up overcrowding transfers if you already have all the priority points you are entitled to and it is safe to remain in your home.

We can provide practical assistance such as initial applications and setting up mutual exchange (e.g. Home swapper).
